Petition Started Hoping To Prevent Paid On-Street Parking At Minnesota State Fair
For years I have scoured the neighborhoods in Falcon Heights for a free parking space at the Minnesota State Fair. The process can be long, or the process can be short, but if you trust the process good things (like finding a spot) are bound to happen.
However, the city is proposing a $25 daily fee for potential parkers beginning in 2025. While many seem to be on board with the idea, citing revenue streams and recouping additional costs incurred by the city, some residents say they do not support the proposal.
A petition by Heather Romaine on ActionNetwork.org currently has 60 signatures from Falcon Heights residents who say they they oppose the parking proposal.
In the petition's description, Romaine points out a number of issues with the proposal.
The first is labeled 'Unclear Purpose and Financial Justifiction,' which says the proposed revenue from parking (quoted at $100,000-$240,000) per year 'lacks sufficient backing and clarity.'
The second qualm refers to the 'Financial Burden on Residents.' Romaine says that the parking charge is 'a significant financial strain for those who rely on street parking,' and cites caregiving and daily needs among those who could be adversely affected by the new policy.
The third point is similar in pointing out that the $25 daily fee could be a barrier for low-and-middle income Fair goers.
The fourth point discusses risks to the city, in particular if there is an issue with ParkMobile or if spaces are not filled.
The final two talking points/arguments are that the public engagement process has been 'insufficient,' and that the permanent parking posts could negatively affect property values.
