Sammy Hagar said the Alice In Chains and the grunge movement made him nervous at the beginning. So he decided that in order to make Van Halen cooler to that fan base, he invited Alice In Chains to open up for them on tour. He also made a good friend in guitarist Jerry Cantrell out of it.
