SAINT CLOUD STATE UNIVERSITY HUSKIES BASEBALL RECAP

(Sunday April 3rd)

The Huskies were not able to play at Joe Faber Field at the MAC for their home opener because of wet conditions, so they traveled to Brandon, South Dakota to take on Sioux Falls University Cougars. This was at the First National Bank Field, they played a double hitter. They jumped out front with two runs in the first, one in the third, two in the fourth, two in the fifth and one in in the sixth inning. They did take advantage of four Cougars errors and they did collect elven hits, including two doubles, a triple and two home runs.

(Game #1)

The Huskies starting pitcher Riley Ahern, a 6’4” righty from The Academy of Holy Angels enjoyed the great support, not only offensive but by errorless defense too.   The junior threw a complete game, seven innings, he gave up three hits, issued one walk, gave up two runs and he recorded eight strikeouts.

The Huskies offense was led by Sam Riola a 6’1” junior from Blaine High School. He had an outstanding game, he went 4-for-4 with a pair of home runs and a double for two RBIs and he scored three runs. John Nett a 5’10” sophomore from Kimberly High School Wisconsin had a very good game. He went 2-for-4 with a triple and a double for two RBI’s and he scored a run. Tate Wallat a 5’11” sophomore from Todd Beamer High School Washington, went 1-for-4 for an RBI and he scored a run. Paul Steffensen a 5’9” senior from Kenai Central High School of Alaska went 2-for-4 with a double. Ethan Navratil a 6’4” freshman from Albany HIgh School had a sacrifice fly for an RBI, he scored a run and he had a stolen base. Drew Bulson a 6’0” junior from St. Cloud Tech went 1-for-3 with a stolen base. Sawyer Smith a 6’4” freshman from Shoreland Lutheran High School Wisconsin went 1-for-2 and he scored a run. Tyler Schiller a 5’10” sophomore from Hutchinson High School earned a walk, he was hit by a pitch and he scored a run. Mitchell Gumbko a 5’11” sophomore from Forrest Hills Northern High School Michigan had a stolen base.

The Cougars starting pitcher was Caleb Ditmarson, he threw 4 2/3 innings, he gave up nine hits, seven runs, one walk and he recorded five strikeouts. Alex Bertram threw 1/3 of an innings, he faced two batters. Grayson Skinner threw one inning in relief, he gave up two hits and one run. The Cougars offense was led by Tylor Cate, he went 1-for-3 with a double, a stolen base and he scored a pair of runs. Ben Serie went 1-for-3 with a double for a RBI and Noah Christensen went 1-for-3 for and RBI and he had a stolen base.

(Game #2)

The Huskies collected twelve hits, including three doubles and a pair of home runs and they played errorless defense. This gave their pitchers a great deal of support. Ryan Duffy a 6’3” lefty from South St. Paul High School started on the mound. The senior threw three solid innings, he gave up two runs and recorded six strikeouts, he did experience some control issues, as he did issued five walks. Nick Brauns a 6’1” righty from Sunrise Mountain High School Arizona threw 1 2/3 innings in relief. The senior gave up one hit, issued a pair of walks and he recorded two strikeouts. Ethan Lanthier a 6’5” righty from Northfield High School threw 3 1/3 innings in relief to earned the win. The freshman gave up one hit, one run, issued four walks and he recorded eight big strikeouts. Eli Emerson a 6’0” righty from Rocori High School threw one inning in relief, The sophomore gave up one hit, issued one walk and he recorded a strikeout. This gave the staff  seventeen total strikeouts.

The Huskies offense was led by the Huskies second baseman Sam Riola, he went 2-for-4 with a home run for three RBIs, he earned a walk, had a stolen base. The Huskies center fielder John Nett had a big game, he went 3-for-4 with a double, he earned a walk, had a pair of stolen bases and he scored three runs. The Huskies third baseman Tate Wallet went 2-for-5 with a double for two RBI’s. Husky left fielder Tyler Schiller went 2-for-4 with a home run and a double and he scored a pair of runs. Husky catcher Cameron Vollmer went 2-for-4 and right fielder Paul Steffensen earned a walk and he was credited for an RBI. The Husky shortstop Max Gamm went 1-for-4 for an RBI, he had three stolen bases and he scored a pair of runs.

The Cougars stating pitcher and pitcher of record Matt Graham threw six innings. He gave up nine hits, he gave up four runs, issued one walk and he recorded one strikeout. Derek Lungren threw two innings in relief, he gave up three hits, four runs, two walks and he recorded two strikeouts. The Cougars offense was led by Trey Hubers, he went 1-for-5 for an RBI and Ben Serie earned a walk and he was credited for an RBI. Conner King earned three walks, scored a pair of runs and he had a stolen base. Zach Andreasen and Brady Klehr both went 1-for-4; note Brady is from Rocori High School. Noah Cristianson, Grant Lung and Noah Buss all earned a walk. Tyler Cate earned five walks and he scored a run.

(Monday April 4th)

The Huskies were defeated in their third game of the series, each team collected eleven hits. But the Cougar put up five runs in the seventh and they couldn’t recover. Andrew Maslowski started on the mound for the Cougars, he threw five innings, he gave up eight hits, seven runs, four walks and he recorded three strikeouts. Zachary Shasta earned the win in relief, he threw 1 2/3 innings. Alex Krout threw one inning in relief to earn the save, he gave up a hit and one run.

The Cougars offense was led by Noah Christianson, he went 1-for-4 with a double for an RBI and he scored a run. Ben Serie had a big game, he went 3-for-5 with a  home run and he scored three runs. Tyler Blackburn went 3-for-5 for three RBI’s and he scored two runs. Brady Klehr,  Rocori High School graduate, went 1-for-3 for two RBI’s. Conner King went 1-for-3 for two RBI’s and he scored a run and Trey Hubers went 1-for-4 for an RBI, he had a stolen base and he scored two runs. Kyle Gulbrandson went 1-for-3 for an RBI and Grant Lung earned a walk and he scored two runs.

The starting pitcher for the Huskies was righty Jack Habeck a sophomore from Appleton East High School Wisconsin. He threw five innings, he gave up six hits, four runs and he recorded six strikeouts. Shannon Ahern a lefty from The Academy of Holy Angels gave up a hit and two runs. Fabian Villegas a righty from Shadow Ridge High School Arizona threw 1 1/3 innings in relief, he gave up two hits, four runs and one walk. Tommy Thompson a righty from Chanhassen High School threw 1 1/3 innings in relief, he gave up two hits and one run.Sam Riola a righty from Blaine High School threw one inning in relief, he recorded a strikeout.

The Huskies offense was led by Tate Wallat went 2-for-4 with a home run and a double, he earned a walk and he scored two runs. Sam Riola, he went 1-for-3 with a home run for two RBI’s, he earned two walks and he scored two runs. Paul Steffensen went 1-for-5 with a double for two RBIs and he scored a pair of runs.

Max Gamm went 1-for-4 with a home run and Tyler Schiller went 1-for-5 for an RBI. John Nett went 2-for-4, he earned a walk and he scored two runs and Cameron Vollmer went 1-for-5. Drew Bulson and Ethan Navratil both went 1-for-4 for an RBI.
