SCSU Men’s Hockey Skates to 5-5 Tie at WMU
The #3 St. Cloud State Men's Hockey team (19-6-4) officially skated to a 5-5 tie at #15 Western Michigan (14-13-2) Friday night in Kalamazoo, Michigan -- but then scored in the 3-on-3 overtime to earn an extra point in the NCHC standings.
In a back and forth contest, the Huskies tied the game at 5-5 on a goal by Mika Ilvonen (3) with just 49 seconds left in the game, after pulling goalie Jeff Smith to gain the extra attacker. Jimmy Schuldt scored in the 3-on-3 OT session.
The rest of the scoring for St. Cloud State came from Mika Ilvonen (2), Easton Brodzinski (11), Ryan Poehling (8), and Jimmy Schuldt (7). The Huskies outshot the Broncos 48-33.
NCAA rules call for a single 5-on-5 overtime period, but leave conferences the ability to add an additional 3-on-3 OT session, followed by a shootout. The NCAA officially recognizes any game tied after the initial 5-on-5 OT as a tie, but the NCHC can (and deos) award standings points for winning the game in the 3-on-3 overtime or in the shootout.
NCHC Standings
