The warmer than normal temperatures and dry conditions have had an adverse affect on duck, pheasant, goose and grouse hunting in Central Minnesota. That according to Glen Schmitt from Outdoor News. He joined me on WJON this week.

Northwestern Minnesota has a fair amount of elk. The elk hunt in Minnesota took place from September 21-29. Glen Schmitt from Outdoor News says only 10 permits were available to hunters and he says 8 elk were shot. Schmitt explains all 8 were male, bull elk.

The duck and goose seasons got underway in Minnesota last weekend. Glen Schmitt from Outdoor News joined me on WJON. He says reports indicate mixed results. Schmitt talked with hunters who did very well while others didn't do as well.

The waterfowl season opens in Minnesota Saturday. Glen Schmitt from Outdoor News joined me on WJON to talk about what to expect. The duck season in Central Minnesota runs from September 21-19 and October 5-November 24.

The first 2024 bear harvest numbers are in from the Minnesota DNR and they are impressive. Glen Schmitt from Outdoor News joined me on WJON. The first days of the Bear hunt September 1-3 Schmitt says, more bear were shot in the state that all of last season.

The opening of bear, teal, goose and dove seasons are Sunday in Minnesota. Glen Schmitt from Outdoor News joined me on WJON. It may seem odd that these seasons start on a Sunday but Schmitt explains the earliest these seasons can start based on framework set up by the Fish & Wildlife Service is September 1.

The Minnesota DNR is having a confiscated equipment auction beginning Friday. Glen Schmitt from Outdoor News joined me on WJON. The auctions will be held online at www.hillerauction.com. The auctions are scheduled for Aug. 26 and Oct. 7. Schmitt says the DNR has done this 12 years and basically they auction off equipment they've confiscated/seized from violators in the past year.

The 2024 hunting regulations are available online for the upcoming seasons. Glen Schmitt from Outdoor News joined me on WJON. Schmitt says the printed version of the new regulations will be available where licenses can be purchased soon.

The Minnesota DNR in collaboration with the Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa plan to move elk from the northwestern part of the state to the northeastern part of the state near Cloquet and north.

The DNR has released preliminary results on the grouse population based on drumming counts. Glen Schmitt from Outdoor News joined me on WJON. Schmitt describes drumming as when male grouse beat their wings quickly with the intent of signaling territory and attracting females.

Southern and northern Minnesota have each dealt with quite a bit of rain in the past couple weeks. Glen Schmitt from Outdoor News joined me on WJON. He says many areas south of the Twin Cities and north of the arrowhead are flooded.

Crappie fishing is really picking up as we head into a busy Memorial Weekend. That according to Glen Schmitt from Outdoor News. He says fish are either done spawning, starting to spawn or are staging just outside spawning areas.
