Minnesota is known across the nation for a few different things – The Wild, The Vikings, Bob Dylan, Prince, and the inordinate amount of beer we consume. Something else that we’re famous (or infamous) for is our unbearably cold winter temperatures.

As someone who was raised in the warm temperatures of Kentucky, I happen to find northern winters absolutely intolerable. In southern states it is unheard of for temperatures to drop under 5 degrees (something that regularly happens here four months out of the entire year.)

But some winters are worse than others for us. There are times when the coldest it gets is 15 below, and other times when it is 40 below colder. I love the holiday season just as much as the next person, but I could probably do without the cold.

So, just what is the coldest Christmas ever recorded in Minnesota? Surprisingly, only 9 degrees below 0 in 1996. I was actually expecting it to be colder than that. I have my fingers crossed that it won't dip down that low this year.
