A bill in the legislature that would have reduced the walleye limit from 6 to 4 was dropped in the latest versions of the environmental and natural resources bill.  Glen Schmitt from Outdoor News says it appears that won't go through this year despite gaining support this session.  He says that there been more support from anglers and conservation groups than there has been in the past.  Schmitt says at least for this year the Minnesota state walleye limit will stay at 6.

The walleye fishing open in Minnesota is less than a month away now.  The opener is set for Saturday May 14. Schmitt says he's "somewhat optimistic" we'll have ice out for the opener throughout the state.  He says northern Minnesota could be a little more iffy.  Schmitt says the ice will go quick once the weather reaches normal or above normal temperatures for April.

Turkey hunting season opened Wednesday. Schmitt says the turkey population in Central Minnesota is very good and he's seen evidence of hunter locally already having success.  He says the cooler than normal temperatures shouldn't reduce the turkey activity this weekend.
