I'm not sure why this is so big, but it is. Maybe it's cause we all secretly like to talk like a pirate. Today is the day you can get away with it. Here's what you need to know...

There's all kinds of 'National ______ Day' things going on all year. You can see them by going to National Day Calendar's website. Today is one of the most popular ones for some reason. It doesn't matter where in the world you are, even right here in Minnesota. We can all be a pirate for the entire day.

The first rule is going crazy on social media with it and hash tagging #TalkLikeAPirateDay every time you make a pirate reference. It's the world we live in, and it's actually fun to do!

Here's how it got started

I was going to tell you how it all started and refer to a link to http://talklikeapirate.com, but apparently this day is so popular that the website went down from too many hits. We may have to check again tomorrow when the day is over.

Back in 1995, John Baur and Mark Summers decided it was a national day to celebrate on September 19th each year. This was before social media, so it wasn't due to a hash tag that caught on. These guys worked their butts off to make this a known day.

How to talk like a pirate

There's not a whole lot of rules, other than to sound like a pirate when you speak. Don't confuse "pirate" talk with other foreign accents like Australian or Irish, you'll sound really dumb.

Since YourDictionary has a specific section on pirate terms, this may be your #1 source for the most appropriate ways to talk like a pirate and use in your normal talk today. Here's some of the most popular along with their meanings:

  • All hands hoay=Everyone get on the deck
  • Shiver me timbers=An expression used to show shock or disbelief
  • Ahoy, matey=Hello, friend
  • Son of a biscuit eater=An insult
  • Three sheets to the wind=Someone who is quite drunk
  • Yo Ho Ho=There is often used to express some sort of cheer but also can be used to call attention to the speaker.

If you're really into this you could even go as far as dressing like a pirate and only speaking in pirate-tongue, it's totally up to you and completely acceptable today. Go nuts with this and be sure to throw in some of your nuggets 'matey', leave them in the comments below!
