Volunteers in Minnesota are so important in so many different industries. Hospitals, non-profit organizations, and even schools rely on the gift of talent and time to operate efficiently.

Each year, AARP seeks nominations for the AARP Andrus Award for Community Service. It is a tribute to volunteers 50 years of age or older who are sharing their time, talents, and skills to enrich the lives of others.

NOMINATIONS FOR THE AARP ANDRUS AWARD FOR COMMUNITY SERVICE

People nominated for this award do not need to be AARP members, but they must live within the state, and the award is presented to someone who inspires others to serve.

This year, AARP Minnesota is presenting the Andrus Award for Community Service to Gayle Brown Olson.

Gayle was chosen for the organization's highest state-level honor for volunteerism for her incredible service as a grief companion volunteer at Bri's Lodge, a Central Minnesota nonprofit that supports individuals and families navigating the loss of a loved one.

ABOUT GAYLE

Gayle is a retired licensed social worker, and began volunteering after a terrible personal loss. Her empathy and expertise have made her an essential part of Bri's Lodge, where she meets weekly with individuals, especially those grieving the death of a spouse or child, to help them access therapy, connect with support groups, and find resources for healing.

"Gayle redefines what it means to age with purpose. Her work reminds us that bravery isn't always loud. Sometimes it looks like showing up, week after week, to sit beside someone in their pain. Sometimes it's saying, 'You're not alone,' and meaning it. Gayle does that, and so much more," said Tami Kruzel, founder of Bri's Lodge.

THE ANDRUS AWARD

The Andrus Award is named after AARP founder Dr. Ethel Percy Andrus and recognizes individuals who make a powerful difference in their communities through volunteer service. Recipients across the country are selected for their ability to inspire others and improve lives.

Thank you, Gayle, for all you do. Volunteering for any organization is a great thing, but especially helping people when they are grieving over the loss of a loved one. I'm glad we have angels on earth like Gayle to help us make it through; to remember the good things, and find strength through community.
