First, we are dealing with rising fuel prices that are jacking up prices of airfare, baggage fees and the lack of complimentary snacks on certain short flights.  Now, that the merger that we knew was coming between Allegiant Airlines and Minnesota based Sun Country Airlines has closed, expect Sun Country's airfare to possibly climb even higher.

BOTH AIRLINES ARE GOING TO CONTINUE INDEPENDENTLY FOR NOW

For right now, the airlines will continue business as usual.  Nothing will change as far as booking, flight schedules and any other plans that travelers have made.  But eventually, most of the jobs that people have here in Minnesota with Sun Country will probably have to relocate to Las Vegas, where Allegiant Airlines is based.

THE BUDGET FRIENDLY AIRLINES MAY NO LONGER BE AS GOOD AS A DEAL AS THEY ONCE WERE

The Thifty Traveler analyst Gunnar Olson has his take on why fares could increase besides the fuel prices.

From Fox 9 News

Now that this has happened, and with the other super discounted airline Spirit going belly up, it might just be easier to get as many rewards as you can with some other major airlines and at least not get nickel and dimed to death with fees.

GET SOME MILES AND REWARDS ON OTHER MAJOR AIRLINES - MIGHT ACTUALLY BE BETTER

It might be smarter to use miles/rewards for most of the fees for your flight such as baggage, and other perks when it's offered.  There are upgrade possibilities, perks on the flight and more.  Totally might be worth looking at your options since these discounted flights are no longer the budget friendly airlines that they used to be.
