It has been a ruff week in our house with getting our fair share of the Flu bug and having a dog coming home from surgery.  Good news is, the surgery went really well!  The vet said they were able to get a really good angle on his leg for where the joints meet up. They also removed some dead tissue that had started building up in the knee area.

Brutus is so drugged up right now.  He’s on about 6 kinds of medication / pain killers / anti-inflammatory type pills, so keeping that all straight has been a fun challenge lol.

I took a little video of him home on day one just so you could see how out of it he is.  He’s actually falling asleep while I’m talking to him.

To give you a  little back story, Brutus had a Tibial Plateau Leveling Osteotomy (TPLO) performed to repair a cranial cruciate ligament (CCL) rupture.  We are now in our first week of having him back home and getting into post operative rehabilitation. It is a LOT to take on lol.

Just to give you an idea of what we’re dealing with, here is a picture of his Frankenstein of a leg.  WARNING, this may make you cringe.  Or it may make you hungry for chicken legs.  WhAt?!  You have to admit, it kind of looks like one of those big bird legs you get at the Renessiance Festival.

Right now we have a schedule with 4 daily sessions where we are giving him pills (with confusingly similar names), 3 daily sessions of icing his leg at 15 minutes each time, and 3 five minute walks each day.  Plus, on Monday we begin going back into the vet for laser therapy, which I’m still learning about so I’ll have to get back to you on why it’s important in the healing process and how effective it is.

Needless to say, it’s a LOT of work on the part of the pet owner post surgery.  I really feel for anyone who has had to take a dog through this journey, but also appreciate the wonderful moments it has allowed us to have with our dog like this one.

This experience has been a good exercise in trust overall, but is also a test in patience.

I’ll be posting updates along with way as we’re only week one in a twelve week therapy plan.  Here’s to keeping a head up about it!  lol
