HBO To Do 2 Part George Carlin Documentary
In my opinion, George Carlin is easily one of the top 5 comedians of all time. Maybe even in the top 2. Few have had the impact with their social commentary than George Carlin.
I was lucky enough to see Carlin perform in the mid 70's. His show was hilarious and, of course, those were the days Carlin used to do his "seven dirty words" bit. By today's standards that bit seems pretty tame but back in the day, it was right on the edge.
I had the chance to interview George's girlfriend, soon after his death and she told me that George was a news and pop culture junkie. She said he would constantly watch news and write all day.
Carlin did 14 HBO Comedy Specials. Usually one a year. Coming up with an hour of new comedy every year is, according other comedians, almost an impossible task. Carlin also made 130 appearances on the Tonight Show.
Certainly one of the smartest comedians, Carlin would do bits that were very well written and thought out. He did best what great comedian do, he made you laugh but he also made you think. In my opinion, George Carlin was a genius!
I was thrilled when I heard HBO was in production of a George Carlin 2 part documentary. The HBO documentary is being directed by Judd Apatow. “George Carlin’s work becomes more relevant every day,” Apatow said. “It is an honor to be given the opportunity to tell the story of his life and work.”
Carlin's daughter, Kelly Carlin, had this to say “Having been the public keeper of my dad’s legacy these last 12 years, I’ve dreamt of the right people appearing at the right moment to give the documentary telling of my father’s story what it deserves — an honoring of his comedic genius and unique cultural impact, while not shying away from his personal struggles and humanity. I’m thrilled that Jerry Hamza and I have teamed up with Judd Apatow, Michael Bonfiglio and Teddy Leifer to make it happen now. May the comedy gods smile up at us as we endeavor to share my dad’s heart, mind and genius with the world.”
No release date yet, but I will keep you posted. There aren't many things on TV I actually look forward to, but this documentary will be one I won't miss.
