More and more people will be casting and reeling in their spare time as they enjoy one of their favorite hobbies.  And it will be likely that some folks will add camping to their fishing trips.

The Minnesota Red Cross passed along a reminder on their “X” account this week about making sure that the fires that are built while camping are put out responsibility.

The Minnesota State Fire Marshall lists these guidelines if you are going to be building a recreational fire.

First, all recreational fires must be at least 25 feet from structures or combustible materials. These materials are described as wood, plastic and paper.

You should not build a fire near LP gas containers. Keep these items at least 10 feet away from any kind of open blaze. Move these items and anything else that could possibly cause flames to spread away from the fire scene.

For recreational fires in Minnesota, you should have at least one portable approved fire extinguisher onsite. This extinguisher should have at least a 4A rating.

Until the fire is completely out, someone must be always positioned near the fire.

The only items that can be put into the fire are wood, branches, brush and charcoal.  Do not put any garbage, plastic, or waste materials in a recreational fire.

Fires must be put out completely before you leave the site.

The Minnesota Red Cross says that you should douse the fire with water, then stir the ashes and drench the fire area with more water again.

Once you think the blaze is completely out, you should touch it to make sure it's cold to the touch.

These simple steps can help ensure that we have a fun and safe spring and summer around Minnesota.
