If you are feeling the urge to get out on an area lake, the good news is that so far this spring/summer, the bite has been pretty good across most lakes in the area. If you are a fan of Perch, it seems this is prime time to land a few, as it appears the Perch bite is picking up.

Mud Flats Holding Some BIG Fish

I like to click through the various fish reports from area lakes, and it seems that if you can locate some mud in ~20' of water, you could be minutes away from hooking some big fish. A couple of reports on Mille Lacs state that between 21-25' on top of the mud, there have been some larger schools of perch that were biting.

Looking closer to home and the Horseshoe Chain, I couldn't find an updated fishing report outside of one released in May, but for Yellow Perch, the same should be true, when you are on the prowl for perch, look for some deeper water, mud, and drop a leach down and see what you get.

The trick is deeper, cooler water, and along weedlines/mud to sand transitions, which are a primary area for Perch to find food.

Best time for catching Perch?

Right now, the fish are coming off spawning and are starting their summer routine, meaning they are HUNGRY, so if you have the time and means, this might be a good week/weekend to get out on the open water for a chance at reeling in some fish, and memories.

Outside of Perch, it seems like the walleye bite is still going well, as is the smallmouth and panfish. Overall, this might be one of the best one to two week stretches to get out and enjoy the Minnesota outdoors!
