There are many great reasons for living in Minnesota. The people are a big part of it, being someone who wasn’t born here I really do find the people here mostly genuine and dare I say, nice.

And folks here for the most part really do care about our state. From caring for bodies of water, and wildlife, to caring about the land itself.

That’s apparent when you see the folks who live here volunteering their time helping to keep the roadways around the state clean. It’s important to them that litter alongside the roadway gets picked up.

If keeping Minnesota clean is important to you, there’s a way that you can get involved and help make sure that happens.

The Minnesota Department of Transportation posted on “X” last week that in 2024, volunteers picked up over 29,000 bags of trash from Minnesota roads.

These volunteers work as a part of the Adopt a Highway Program. You’ve probably seen the signs stating that a particular stretch of a roadway has been adopted by a certain group.

Church groups, civic organizations, even businesses spend time walking along the roadways bagging litter.

Another important facet of this program is that it saves taxpayers money. State employees can spend their time working on bigger projects because volunteers fill that gap with the roadside cleanup.

The commitment to be a volunteer only requires clean-up twice per year, but you can clean more if you want or there’s a need.

MnDOT also used the “X” post to remind motorists that the crews wearing those bright yellow vests will be out working again this spring and summer.

Keep an eye out for them this year so they can keep our state clean, and you and them stay safe on the roads.
