After the 9-11 attacks the Federal Government put new enhanced I.D. laws into place requiring states to upgrade I.D.s and Driver's Licenses effective January 2016, with the intent of protecting the friendly skies. The problem is the State of Minnesota isn't playing ball, and your Minnesota Driver's License is not compliant.

What could it mean? Simply put, Minnesotans would might not be able to fly after the first of the year using a MN DL as identification. You'd need a passport to fly from Minneapolis to Bismarck.

Minnesota is one of only four states refusing to upgrade their system -- saying it's too expensive, and puts state residents' privacy at risk.

At this point, I'd apply for a passport if you think you're going to be flying in the U.S. in early 2016. Even if Minnesota decides to play ball -- I doubt that we'll all have new, enhanced Driver's Licenses before the end of December. Have you ever been to the DMV?

A Minnesota 'Enhanced Driver's Licence' does exist, but it's likely you don't have one, as they are not a regular issue. You can convert your regular DL to one of those by asking for it at the DMV, for an extra $15 charge of course.
