The Last Time We Got Significant Snow in March in Minnesota
Snow in March is something that is very common in Minnesota. And historically March is considered to be a very snowy month. However, it does seem to be a different for the last couple of years.
WE HAVE SOME HEAVY SNOWFALL PREDICTED FOR THIS WEEKEND
This year, the prediction is to get some significant snow this weekend - Saturday evening into Sunday morning. Potential for 5-8 inches of snow in the St. Cloud area, whereas Southern Minnesota could get close to a foot of snow, and last night the Northern part of Minnesota got about 8 inches of snow. That's kind of a lot for this time of the year, because it's like Spring, but not quite. This time of year it can be 60 one day and snowing the next. Lots of fun. Oh, and then usually that snow is very heavy because of the moisture content at this time of year.
WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME SOMETHING LIKE THIS HAPPENED
Looking back, when was the last time we got a bunch of snow in March. Well, if we look back a couple of years, remember 2023? That was the year we got like 90 inches of snow or something crazy throughout the winter. In March of that year we saw 23.5 inches of snow throughout the month. The weekend of March 11-12, we had a major snow event.
In March of 2024, we got some significant snow with 18.2 inches, and it was the 8th snowiest March on record.
The snowiest March on record was back in 1965 when Minnesota got 51.7 inches of snow. Can you imagine? That's the average snowfall for the entire winter, received all in one month. Yuck.
In 1985 17+ inches of snow that fell on the weekend of March 3-4. We aren't supposed to get that kind of dumping this weekend, at least not in St. Cloud, but potentially the Eastern part of Minnesota into Wisconsin and Southern Minnesota could get something close to that. They can have it.
LOVE SNOW? GREAT WEEKEND TO GET YOUR LAST WINTER SPORTS FUN IN
The good thing about getting a dumping of snow this time of the year is that you know it's not going to last long, but it certainly does create quite the mess for a few days. The end of next week is already predicted to be back into the mid 40s.
So, enjoy a big snowstorm with everything that has to do with that - another time to go snowmobiling, snowshoeing, skiing & snowboarding or whatever is your jam. One last blast of winter.
