ST. JOSEPH - St. Joseph was named Monday as the safest city in Minnesota in a report issued by Safewise, a home security and safety company.

SafeWise chose the safest cities in Minnesota by reviewing the most recent FBI Crime Report statistics from 2014, along with population data. Cities with fewer that 5,000 residents and those who failed to submit a complete crime report to the FBI were eliminated.

The list was narrowed down based on the number of reported violent crimes (assault, rape, murder and robbery) and property crimes (burglary, arson, theft) in each city. It was then calculated the likelihood of the crimes happening out of 1,000 people in each city.

St. Joseph took #1 on the list of 20 Minnesota cities by reporting no violent crimes and 2.99 property crimes per 1,000. Cold Spring/Richmond also made the list at #11, reporting .73 violent crimes and 10.81 property crimes per 1,000 people. Sartell was #56 on the list.

St. Joseph was previously ranked #4 on the list.

According to the most recent FBI Crime Report, the state's overall crime rate is nearly 20 percent less than the national average.
