Grand Funk Railroad right off the bat were successful, they had six albums prior to 'We're An American Band' that made the Top 10 except two of them.
The band prior to this album primarily went by the name Grand Funk, it was the the title track that ended up giving the band their first #1 single.
'We're An American Band'and their next album 'Shinin' On' were both produced by Todd Rundgren.
