Big day for release date news, as Fox has set May 23, 2014 for ‘Dawn of the Planet of the Apes,’ the sequel to last year’s ‘Rise of the Planet of the Apes.’

Deadline reports that Fox has staked the Memorial Day weekend for their ‘Apes’ sequel, which sees director Rupert Wyatt returning to helm the film. ‘Rise’ made $483 million at the box office last year, pretty much guaranteeing a sequel.

The first film starred James Franco as a scientist looking to find a cure for Alzheimer’s disease through the use of gene therapy. But the virus he uses to test on the chimpanzees yields something more — human intelligence, leading to the titular rise as the primates become increasingly intelligent and more aware.

No plot details are known as of yet about this sequel, or whether any of the stars from the film will return. But we do know that this sequel already has an awesome title. ‘Planet of the Apes’ has a storied franchise history, including several sequels and prequels based on the original film from 1968, and a horrible, best if forgotten remake from director Tim Burton.
