Miraculous Survival: Hot Air Balloon Collides With Power Lines In Rochester

HOT AIR BALLOON INCIDENT

The Rochester Fire Department had to respond to an incident that involved a hot air balloon on Wednesday, March 20th, 2024 at about 7 pm.

According to the story, the accident happened on Highway 63 South, close to 40th Street yesterday. It happened around 7 pm. Three people were in the basket of the hot air balloon, and amazingly all three of them survived. Two had minor injuries, and a third person was reported as having no injuries at all after the basket fell approximately 20 feet after the balloon struck an electric line.

WHAT HAPPENED?

A Remax balloon started drifting and struck some power lines along Highway 63 South. Sparks started to fly as the hot air balloon started to spin out of control. A brush fire breaks out shortly afterward. Crews were able to get the fire under control.

Police say they think a gust of wind caught the balloon as it was trying to land, causing the basket to fall more than 20 feet to the ground. The individuals in the basket of the balloon were amazingly able to walk away from the basket.

The FAA is going to be investigating the incident as well as the National Transportation Safety Board.
