A recent survey found that we as Americans spend over $1,000 in restaurants over the course of a year, and when you factor in take-out food we spend over $2,500 a year.  For a tight-ass like myself that is a staggering number.  If you don't know me then you should know that I hate spending money, especially eating out.

The wort part about spending this money is the fact that we over-pay for certain items that we order.  Here are the top five items we order in restaurants that we pay too much for.

Here are the ten most overpriced things at restaurants.

1. Pasta - Next time you are in a grocery store check out how cheap you can buy a big bag of past noodles and a can of sauce for.  On average you can usually make a past dish for about a buck at home versus $10 in a restaurant.

2. Salad - I can get a head of lettuce for around $1.50, which will make about six salads.  In comparison we spend anywhere from $6-$10 getting a salad in a decent restaurant.

3. Wine - In most restaurants you can usually find a cheap wine for about $8 a glass, or $30 for a bottle.  If you look in a liquor store you will probably find that same bottle for about $15.

4. Coffee and tea - You're looking to pay about $1.50 per cup in a restaurant and around $6 (or more) at places like Starbucks.  Just the other day I bought a pound of coffee in Coborns for around $8, which will get me waaaaay more cups that if I went to a restaurant or Starbucks.

5. Juice and soda - This is another highly marked up item in a restaurant  Usually you can buy a carton of juice for around $4 in the grocery store, but in comparison you will spend that for one glass.  Soda is even cheaper at the grocery store.
