We're entering the season of giving and all over the United States there are many people pulling out their wallets, giving their time to volunteer or finding other ways to help.

The first thing we relate to being charitable is pulling out a wallet and donating money.  But that's not the only way to help.  Being generous with your time for other peoples needs like doing chores for the elderly or providing meals to families in your communities that are cash strapped are other ways to help.

So what states are more generous than others?  Forbes Advisor did a survey to determine the most charitable states.  Here's how they describe how they came up with the results:

Forbes Advisor compared all 50 states and the District of Columbia across seven metrics. Our charitable giving statistics for each state are based on that state’s charitable giving rate, formal volunteer rate and informal helping rate, as well as changes in each of these rates from 2019 to 2021 and the number of charities per capita.

Having just lived in California for the past 15 years I would've said that state would place at the bottom of the generosity scale, and they did.  But I would also defend that state because of high cost of living there and the fact that so many are just barely surviving.

On the opposite side, being born and raised in Minnesota I would guess that our state would come in at the top of the scale, and sure enough, we did.  On the partial graphic you'll see the darker the square the more generous.  The lighter squares are least generous.

Minnesota came in as the 2nd most charitable state, behind only our neighbors to the south in Iowa.  It feels good to know we live in a state where being generous and giving is a virtue we embrace.
