It doesn't seem like it's been this long.  30 years since Grand Casino opened.  I remember being in college and interning at the St. Cloud Times.  It might have even still been the St. Cloud Daily Times then.  But I knew there was going to be an ongoing story in the paper talking about the opening of Grand Casino.  They needed an icon for each story that was going to be featured leading up to the opening. It was my job to  come up with that icon.

I just remember thinking "a casino in Minnesota"? I thought those were just for places like Las Vegas and Atlantic City.  And here they were talking about how cool this casino(s) would be.  Including live music, concerts, the amphitheatre in Hinkley, and a huge hotel and casino.  But there was a no alcohol thing.  At least at the Mille Lacs location.  That has since changed, but for the longest time that wasn't allowed or included.  I find that strange, but I get why.  But I still thought it was strange for a casino.

Since then, it has become such a destination and going through a few remodels, some large and some small, a ton of artists and comedians performing there, and I'm sure a lot of people winning some serious cash.  I would not be one of those people.  Casinos for me are just giant monsters that eat my money.  But that's me.  I'm not all that lucky.  I'm glad that others are.

Grand Casino is celebrating their 30 years with some special ways to win some big money. The celebration will last all month.
