This seems crazy. And definitely something that no one really bargained for.  Here is the quick summary -

From KARE 11

There is a family in Maple Grove that exprienced a sudden death. From that, the family home became available.  So - another family member bought the home so it could stay within the family - nostalgia reasons.

Unbeknownst to them, there had been a developer out with plans on building a townhome community right next to the family home in question  The people who bought the home had no idea until they saw the development happening, and went over to inquire what was going on.  The plan had been discussed with the previous owner, and because of the sudden death, that information had not been coveyed to anyone else.

Dilemma.

So - they were given a couple of options, being that the normal way into the family home was being eliminated, option one was to have a road that extended into the townhome community, and would be subject to HOAs.  Option number two is to have part of the road that is being eliminated become a private drive that will be about 1,000 feet long.  Sounds horrible in the winter with snow removal.  Yuck!

The new owners of the home pondered the options and didn't really like either one, so they didn't respond in a timeframe that was adequate for the developer.  So, they made the decision for them and went along with the 1,000 foot driveway.  The other issues besides the snow removal would be the maintenance and upkeep of the road.  All responsibility of the homeowner as it would now be a "private drive".  Great.

CAN THEY GO BACK

Now, there's a request in to please hold off on the development of the long (extremely long) driveway and see if option number 1 would be still available.  There would be the HOA fees, but it might be a much less expensive option compared to the 1,000 foot long driveway.

So, what would you do?  Yikes!  You can read the full story here on the KARE 11 website.

MOVE THE HOUSE?

I feel like moving might be the best decision.  Did they look into moving the house?  Considering the cost, maybe that one would be best.  If possible??  Would you want to live next to the townhome community?  For sale sign in the future?
