Study Finds Minnesota To Be Among Nation’s Safest States
WalletHub's latest study has determined the safest states in the United States of America. Minnesota ranks inside the top ten when it comes to safety.
The sites methodology says:
In order to determine the safest states in which to live, WalletHub compared the 50 states across five key dimensions: 1) Personal & Residential Safety, 2) Financial Safety, 3) Road Safety, 4) Workplace Safety, and 5) Emergency Preparedness.
We evaluated those dimensions using 52 relevant metrics, which are listed below with their corresponding weights. Each metric was graded on a 100-point scale, with a score of 100 representing the highest level of safety.
We then determined each state’s weighted average across all metrics to calculate its overall score and used the resulting scores to rank-order our sample.
Using that criteria, Minnesota ranked as the eighth-safest in the USA. The Land of 10,000 Lakes ranked 14th in 'Murders and Non-Negligent Manslaughters per capita,' 16th in 'Assaults per Capita,' 5th in 'Fatal Occupational Injuries,' 3rd in 'Fatalities per 100 Million Vehicle Miles,' 28th in 'Sex Offenders per capita' and 5th in 'Share of Uninsured Population.'
The top five safest states were, in order, Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine, Massachusetts and Utah.
The five least safe states were (in order) Louisiana, Mississippi, Texas, Arkansas and Florida.
“The safest states in America protect their residents from harm in a multitude of different ways, from keeping crime rates low and maintaining safe roadways to having strong economies and job markets that prevent people from falling into dangerous financial situations," said WalletHub analyst Chip Lupo. "They have high levels of occupational safety and disaster preparedness, too. In addition, states are made safer by efforts that individual residents take, such as forming a neighborhood watch or working in firefighting and EMT jobs at high rates.”
