The St. Cloud State football team won 36-24 at Minnesota-Crookston Saturday afternoon. SCSU led 27-3 at halftime and 36-3 after 3 quarters. Phil Klaphake threw for 229 yards and 4 touchdowns and Michael Walker ran for 37 yards and 1 touchdown for SCSU. Chad Peterson had 5 catches for 145 yards and 1 touchdown and Eli Shomaker had 2 catches for 110 yards and 2 touchdown for the Huskies.
St. John's football is still winless in the MIAC after losing 48-17 at Augsburg Saturday afternoon. The loss is the 4th straight for St. John's. St. John's trailed 21-10 at halftime and it only got worse in the 2nd half. Nick Martin threw for 110 yards and 1 touchdown with 1 interception and he ran 23 yards and 1 touchdown for the Johnnies. Three quarterback appeared in the game for St. John's with Martin starting.
Parker Hagen pulled off a last second touchdown pass to Jake Wensel as the Sabres squeak out a win over the Tigers.
The Twins did not renew the c0ntracts of 3 coaches and their head athletic trainer. Longtime bullpen coach Rick Stelmaszek, 3rd base coach Steve Liddle and first base coach Jerry White and head coach athletic trainer Rick McWane all had their contacts not renewed for 2013. The Twins also reassigned bench coach Scott Ulger and hitting coach Joe Vavra. Ulger will work the outfielders and Vavra will work with the infielders.
The NHL cancelled the first 2 weeks of the regular season today due to the continued lockout. Games are now cancelled through October 24. The Wild were set to start on the regular season on October 13. The entire preseason has already by cancelled by the NHL. Talks are ongoing to reach a new collective bargaining agreement but not deal appears to be imminent.
The High School Football rankings were announced Thursday and Rocori is ranked #8 this week in the Class 4A state poll. Rocori is 4-1 and is coming off a 20-12 loss at home to previously winless Sauk Rapids-Rice. The Spartans lost starting quarterback and top runner Mac Mueller. The Spartans will play at Big Lake Friday night at 7pm, pregame on AM 1390-the Fan at 6:45.
The St. John's football team looks to end a 3-game losing streak when they play at Augsburg in Minneapolis on Saturday at 1pm. The Johnnies are 0-3 in the MIAC and 2-3 overall. St. John's will play this week and next week without starting quarterback Connor Bruns. Bruns could return after St. John's bye week to play against Gustavus on October 27. Freshman Nick Martin will get the start at quarterback again this week.
Vikings defensive end Jared Allen didn't practice Wednesday due to a groin injury but the Vikings believe Allen can play Sunday against Tennessee.
The St. Cloud State football team is 3-2 after pulling off a stunning 51-49 upset win over then 2nd ranked Minnesota-Duluth on Saturday. The Huskies are back on track and remain in contention to make the playoffs if they can run the table. SCSU's schedule was front loaded with tough opponents and has eased up a bit.
The Timberwolves begin training camp at Minnesota State-Mankato inside the Taylor Center today. The Wolves have many new faces this season including guards Brandon Roy and Chase Budinger and forward Andrei Kirilenko.
The St. Cloud State men's hockey team received votes in this week's USCHO.com Division I men's college hockey poll. SCSU earned 78 points and are 3 points out of the 20th spot in the poll. Boston College is ranked #1 followed by the Gophers, Michigan, North Dakota and Union in the top 5. Denver is ranked #8, MN-Duluth is #12, and Wisconsin is ranked #18.
The Vikings won 20-13 at Detroit Sunday to improve to 3-1 on the season. Percy Harvin started the game with a 105-yard kickoff return touchdown and Marcus Sherels returned a punt 77-yards for a touchdown in the 3rd quarter. Blair Walsh made 2 of 3 field goals and Adrian Peterson ran for 102 yards on 21 carries for the Vikings. Christian Ponder was 16-26 for 111 yards with no touchdowns and no interceptions. Jerome Simpson in his first game this season had 4 catches for 50 yards.
