Back in the 80's we saw the evolution of Metal as more "Thrash" bands started to break into the scene like Metallica, Megadeth, Anthrax, Overkill, Metal Church and others.  Most of them were heavily influenced by the New Wave Of British Heavy Metal AND in many cases had Punk as a secondary influence.

Metal Church never had the success of Metallica, Megadeth and others, but they managed to carve out a decent following world-wide.  Their first singer David Wayne had a unique high-pitched nasty growl set them apart from many others.  Their album from 1986 called "The Dark" is often called one of Thrash Metal's greatest releases (despite what the inept writers like Eduardo Rivadavia at All Music say).  However, the song that most people remember was the single "Watch The Children Pray", a dark and brooding ballad.
