Music and Words With Jerry Garcia And Robert Hunter, The Series (Part Two) [VIDEO]
Robert Hunter had already contributed memorable lyrics by 1969 for signature Grateful Dead songs including "St. Stephen," "China Cat Sunflower," "The Eleven" and "Dark Star" , however; the era of Gold kicked in when the team of Garcia-Hunter and their songwriting began with the Grateful Dead's fifth album.
It was recorded in February 1970 and originally released on June 14, 1970.
The album was ranked number 262 on Rolling Stone's magazine list of the 500 greatest albums of all time in 2003.
Among the Garcia-Hunter gems found here are "High Time," "Black Peter," "Dire Wolf," "New Speedway Boogie" and the timeless anthems, "Uncle John's Band" and "Casey Jones."
"Casey Jones" is loosely based on the real life happenings of the heroic engineer Casey Jones, who was the subject of the famous 1902 ballad, " The Ballad of Casey Jones."
I seriously doubt that Casey Jones was high on cocaine when he took over the train, and although his life was ended when he was hit by a train traveling the wrong way, he sacrificed his life so those on board could be saved.
Who really knows he might have been on something.
