Whether you're talking about the date 4/20, the time 4:20, the area code (420), or any other rendition of the number, '420' -- it has become the unofficial, universal symbol for the use and appreciation or marijuana. But what does it mean, and where did it come from?

Some think it's Bob Marley's death date (nope), the penal code for marijuana possession (nope), the chemical makeup (nope), not that either.

It turns out that the prevailing theory is that it comes from a bunch of guys that used to smoke pot at 4:20 every afternoon in California. They did it so often, that 4:20 became to mean time to 'light up,' which became universal symbol for the herbal drug.

On a side note, when I lived in Colorado, mile marker 420 on I-70 east of Denver was stolen so many times -- it was changed to mile marker 419.99. (True story.)
