I had a friend when I was growing up and his dad never owned a credit card. "If we can't pay cash, we don't need it" was his dad's philosophy.  I also had a friend in Florida who absolutely refused to pay interest. She would pay off the entire balance every month, even if she had to eat Ramen Noodles all month.

As far as credit card debt, Minnesota ranks at #16 with a median card balance of $2552 and a median income of $51,758. Pay it off on time would rack up about $227 in interest with a pay off time of a little over 13 months.

North Dakota and South Dakota ranked higher in credit card debt with North Dakota at #12 and South Dakota at #14. Wisconsin and Iowa are doing much better with Iowa at # 44 and Wisconsin at #30.

WalletHub collected data from the US Census Bureau, TransUnion, the Federal Reserve and WalletHub's credit card payoff calculator to figure what it would cost to pay off the median credit card balance in each of the 50 states and D.C.

According to WalletHub "Americans aren’t all in the same boat when it comes to credit-card debt, though. People in some states charge less than others, whether because they are less impacted by the pandemic, are more responsible about their finances or a number of other factors"
