Minnesota DNR Warns Of Thin Ice
Lately, several people have had their ATV or snowmobile through the ice on Minnesota lakes. Whether you are snow shoeing, cross country skiing or ice finishing the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources warns that there may be dangerously thin ice in spots.
Anglers are reporting some pretty good fishing in spots on Minnesota lakes. Being true fisherman, they aren't exactly clear on where their secret spot might be.
“It’s great. Love taking the kids ice fishing. They’re always into it. And enjoy it,” said angler Noe Alvarado. “Lots of walleye, sunfish, even a couple of Northerns. It was a good day,” said angler Zach Froman.
Many lakes in the area have a good ten inches of ice but that can fluctuate depending on currents, snow cover, etc. Ice doesn't form as well under snow cover. “You want to see at least 4 inches of clear, solid ice before stepping on the ice,” said Lisa Dugan, from DNR.
Before taking ATVs or snowmobiles out on the lake there should be 5 to 7 inches of ice on the lake. It's recommended you use ice chisels to check the ice beforehand. DNR also wants people to prepare for the worst and bring ice picks and life jackets with you when heading out on the lake.
Remember, no ice is completely safe. “People are ready to have something to do but they just get out too early. You just have to wait and be safe,” said Froman.
Also the DNR recommends 8 to 12 inches of ice for cars and smaller pickups. 12 to 15 inches of ice for a medium size truck. “I know people get anxious to get out there, but you got to do what you’ve got to do. You’ve got to be safe,” said Alvarado.
